American Indian and Alaska Native People Smoking Cessation Barriers

About this study

The purpose of this study is to understand barriers to maintenance of smoking abstinence after achieving cessation, and barriers to cessation during pregnancy among American Indians and Alaska Native (AI/AN) people with a mixed methods prospective cohort study. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • AI/AN current or former smoker group:
    • Self-identified as American Indian or Alaska Native;
    • Currently smoke cigarettes or are formers smokers;
    • Age 14+.
  • Smoking cessation counselor group:
    • Conducts smoking cessation counseling;
    • Has clinical experience providing counseling for AI/AN smokers;
    • Age 18+.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • AI/AN current or former smoker group:
    • Does not identify as American Indian or Alaska Native;
    • Never smokers;
    • Age <14.
  • Smoking cessation counselor group:
    • Counseling practice does not include smoking cessation;
    • No clinical experience working with AI/AN patients;
    • Not currently engaged in clinical practice;
    • Age <18.
