Cutaneous Autonomic Innervation in Skin Pressure Injury Pathophysiology After Spinal Cord Injury

Overview

About this study

The overall goal of this research is to investigate potential differences in the regulation of skin blood flow in individuals with spinal cord injury.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

2 groups comprised of female and male adults:

  • SCI cohort (n=25):
    • Aged 18-50;
    • Neurological level of injury at or below C6;
    • American Spinal Association Impairment Scale (AIS) injury A-C;
    • > 24 months post injury;
    • Non-injured able-bodied control cohort (n=15);
  • Note that control participants will be matched by age and sex to the SCI cohort.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Clinical diagnosis of heart disease, hypertension, coronary disease, diabetes, or other neurological diseases (outside of SCI).
  • Cancer.
  • Pregnant women.
  • Underweight or obese individuals (body mass index < 18.5 or > 30.0 kg/m^2).
  • Regularly taking medication that may influence blood flow to the skin (e.g., antihistamines, beta-blockers, prednisone, etc.).
  • Use of amphetamines (Ritalin, Adderall, Concerta) in the past 48 hours.
  • Those with SCI with extreme spasticity (to avoid spontaneous contraction, as evaluated by study physician).

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.

Eligibility last updated 11/9/23. Questions regarding updates should be directed to the study team contact.
