Assessment of the Utility of Breath Biomarkers for Diagnosis or Follow Up in Valley Fever

About this study

The purpose of this study is to study the utility of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath to distinguish acute pulmonary coccidioidomycosis (Valley Fever) from other causes of community acquired pneumonia 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Able and willing to participate and provide consent.
  • Age ≥ 18 years.
  • Male or female.
  • Immunocompetent or Immunosuppressed.
  • Respiratory infection may be either CAP or Valley Fever:
    • CAP as diagnosed by medical provider in conjunction with all  the following:
      • Presence of typical symptoms;
      • Presence of supporting diagnostic imaging;
      • Presence of supporting diagnostic testing.
    • Proven or probable primary pulmonary coccidioidomycosis (VF):
      • Presence of typical symptoms;
      • Presence of typical radiographic abnormalities;
      • Probable: requires positive serology initially or in follow up (NOT EIA IgM-only seropositivity);
      • Proven: requires positive culture, cytology, PCR or pathologic results.
  • Inpatient or outpatient at enrollment.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Unable or unwilling to participate or provide consent.
  • Age < 18 years.
  • History of lung transplant.
  • Systemic antifungal  treatment  of >1 week duration within past 30 days.
  • Diagnosed or treated currently with any of the following:
    • Pneumonia from 2 or more concurrent microbiologic etiologies;
    • Oral candidiasis.
