Family-Based Smoking Cessation Alaska Native

About this study

The purpsoe of this study is to evaluate intervention effectiveness and implementation of a family-based smoking cessation intervention with Alaska Native peoples. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:
(1) have ANAI ancestry (based on self-reported race) and reside in 501 Alaska;
(2) are aged >18 years;
(3) self-report cigarette smoking in the past 7 days (includes cigarillos, roll your own cigarettes; excludes cigars, vaping, or e-cigarettes);
(4) on average, have smoked >3 cigarettes per day (cpd) over the past 3 months (note that other tobacco or nicotine products can be used);
(5) are considering or willing to make a quit attempt;
(6) will nominate one adult family member who will enroll;
(7) are willing to complete an Alere™ iScreen oral swab test to biochemically confirm self-reported smoking status with a positive test result for smoking as described above;
(8) are willing to upload digital photographs of self during completion of smoking status tests;
(9) own or have access to a mobile phone with text messaging capabilities, or a tablet with Internet access, or is willing/able to use a loaner iPad (with data plan renumeration if needed) for the study duration;
(10) are willing to complete and sign an Internal Revenue Service Tax Identification Number and Certification (W-9) form if they wish to receive payments on the study; and
(11) are willing to provide written informed consent and participate in study related tests and procedures. 

Family members regardless of smoking status or residence will be eligible if they:

  • (1) are >18 years old,
  • (2) are defined as family and nominated by the index participant or has an ANAI family member who is 18 years or older and smokes that they would like to support in quitting;
  • (3) own or have access to a mobile phone with text messaging capabilities, or a tablet with internet access, or is willing/able to use a loaner iPad (with data plan remuneration if needed) for the study duration;
  • (4) are willing to complete and sign W-9 form for research staff to report payments. earned if they wish to receive payments on the study; and
  • (5) are willing to provide written informed consent and participate in study related procedures. Both men and women, those from non-ANAI racial/ethnic groups, and those who live outside of Alaska in the United States will be eligible. 


Exclusion Criteria:
(1) used cessation pharmacotherapy or a stop smoking program within the past 3 months;
(2) are already enrolled in the study with another family member;
(3) self-report current marijuana smoking more than once per week and not willing to quit for the study duration; or
(4) participated in a prior study phase.

Family members cannot take part if they are already enrolled with another family member.
Family members may only support one index participant to mitigate concern about lack of independence of household or other support networks, and potential for cross-treatment contamination, which could attenuate effects in the RCT.
Family members will be excluded from participating if they participated in a prior study phase.
