Inspiratory Muscle Dysfunction in Heart Failure: Implications for Exercise Intolerance and Exertional Symptomology

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the impact of inspiratory muscle dysfunction on exercise tolerance in patients with heart failure.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adults 18 years and older.
  • English speaking.
  • Able to provide consent.
  • Clinically diagnosed stable HFpEF with NYHA Class I-III symptoms (HFpEF group only)
  • Receiving standard pharmacologic therapy for > 3 months.
  • Additionally, English speaking adults aged 18 years and older who do not have HF (and otherwise healthy) and able to provide consent will be recruited to match the age, sex, and BMI of the HFpEF patients.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Individuals who are unable to engage in exercise.
  • Current smokers or smoking history of > 20 pack years.
  • Sustained ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation within 21 days of visit 1.
  • Second- or third-degree heart block.
  • Body mass index > 45 kg/m2.
  • Pregnant women (testing will be done by research team if requested).
  • Peripheral artery disease.
  • Glomerular filtrate rate of > 50 mL/min/1.73m2.
