Health Care Access Among Patients from Underserved Populations

Overview

About this study

The purpose of the study is to explore the experience of accessing health care services from the perspective of patients from groups who have historically faced barriers to accessing health care services and to assess the extent to which patient secure messages align with preferences, needs, and values identified in patient interviews.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult male and female patients who have sent secure messages to their care team via Mayo Clinic patient portal from 2010 to present.
  • Additional inclusion criteria (e.g., patients with a home address in a rural zip code) will be determined after collection and analysis of patient portal message content.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Any patients who have not used secure messages functionality in the Mayo Clinic patient portal, or sent secure messages outside the study time frame.
  • We will exclude those who did not grant research authorization, and those specially flagged with Federal Medical Center (FMC), legal, VIP, and  General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
  • Additional exclusion criteria (e.g., patients with a home address in an urban zip code) will be determined after collection and analysis of patient portal message content.
