Effect of Opioid Cessation on Opioid-Induced Esophageal Dysfunction

About this study

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of opioid cessation on patients with OIED, and document the prevalence of esophageal symptoms and OIED in a wide sample of patients on chronic opioids.    

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients 18 years of age or older.
  • Patients enrolled in the Pain Rehabilitation Center for opioid cessation or seen in the GI clinic, with or without esophageal symptoms.
  • Patients with abnormal HRM.
  • Patients with chronic opioid use.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Inability to provide informed consent. 
  • Patients with previous gastroesophageal surgery or pneumatic dilation.
  • Esophageal botulinum toxin injection within the prior 12 months.
  • Esophageal stricture.
  • Achalasia types I and II.
  • Allergy to Lidocaine or other local anesthetics.
  • Subjects on anticoagulation.
  • Bilateral nasal obstruction.
  • Pregnancy or breast feeding.
