High Flow Nasal Cannula Compared to Standard Oxygen Therapy for Endoscopic Ultrasound Procedure in High Risk Patients

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine if high flow nasal cannual (HFNC) can decrease recovery time and procedural conditions in high risk patients (patients with a BMI > or equal to 35 kg/m2) undergoing endoscopic ultrasound in comparison to conventional oxygen therapy.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • All patients that present for diagnostic EUS (with or without endoscopy/or sampling/biopsy) with BMI³35 kg/m2 in procedure rooms 203 and 206 will be approached to participate.
  • Patients age 18 or greater will be considered for enrollment

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Need for general anesthesia for the procedure instead of the standard monitored anesthesia care.
  • Patients undergoing combined procedure: Therapeutic EUS/combined procedures including EUS/ERCP, EUS/colonoscopy.
  • Patients on home oxygen therapy, or the diagnosis of “severe COPD”.
  • Patients with existing tracheostomy.
  • Inpatients undergoing EUS.
  • Inability to consent.
  • Cognitive impairment.
