Epididymal and Testicular Sperm for In-Vitro Fertilization

About this study

The purpose of this study is to determine the feasibility of a novel methodology to evaluate and compare two different sperm extraction techniques (epididymal sperm aspiration & testicular sperm extraction) in males with obstructive azoospermia who are undergoing in vitro fertilization. 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Mayo Clinic, RST Urology Department patient
  • Confirmed diagnosis of obstructive azoospermia
  • Pursuing in vitro fertilization with a partner with a plan to complete their entire in vitro fertilization cycle at Mayo Clinic
  • Over 18 years old
  • Informed consent and agreement to share data with the research team in writing
  • Female partner with an anti-mullerian hormone level > 1.0 ng/mL

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Under secondary treatment or supplements beyond the standard of care for current conditions (i.e. testosterone, ashwagandha, ginkgo biloba, etc)
  • Unable to follow the SOC procedures and visits within the andrology clinic
  • History of chemotherapy, radiation, or use of medications that may affect fertility (determined by the treating physician)
  • Female partner undergoing minimal stimulation method for ovulation induction
  • Female partner with less than eight mature oocytes retrieved
