A Study of Meaningful Change

Overview

About this study

The purpose of this study is to assess the feasibility of asking patients to provide a narrative description of their symptom experience and to personalize a definition of meaningful change via a web-based survey and to assess whether the use of the narrative description and personalized definition help patients determine whether they have experienced a meaningful change in symptoms over time.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Patients with a diagnosis of cancer, including solid tumor or hematologic malignancy, receiving treatment at Mayo Clinic, Rochester.
  • To ensure sampling patients likely to have experienced changes in fatigue and other symptoms, we will identify patients who have a confirmed diagnosis for a malignant neoplasm and who have had at least two outpatient encounters for anti-cancer treatment in the past 3 months (designed to identify those in active treatment) for 50% of the sample. For the other 50%, we will identify those with at least two outpatient encounters between 3 and 6 months but no treatment in past 3 (recently completed treatment). The latter group is intended to capture improvements in fatigue following completion of anti-cancer treatment.  We will exclude those who had surgery alone. The sampling methodology developed for the CAHPS Cancer Care survey[9] will be modified and used to identify eligible patients from Mayo Clinic’s electronic health record.
  • As the Qualtrics survey web-based, availability of an email address in the patients’ medical is required.
  • Answered “Yes” to screening question: “In the past 3 months, have you experienced fatigue?” Yes/No

Exclusion Criteria

  • Have not experienced fatigue in the past 3 months
  • Unable to answer a web-based survey in English

Note: Other protocol defined Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria may apply.
