About this study

The purpose of this study is to conceptualize and understand the nature and prevalence of industrialized healthcare pathologies present in the ICU, namely cruelty, burden, hurry, and blur in the context healthcare delivery in ICU settings from the perspectives of patients and their caregivers, as well as their healthcare providers, and to develop a consensus-based framework for implementing patient-centered care in the ICU, while incorporating the principles advocated by the Patient Revolution.

 

 

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Healthcare providers (clinicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, social workers and desk operation managers) working in the different Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN.
  • Patients included in this study will be English speaking adults (18 years of age or older), receiving ongoing care at the ICUs of Mayo Clinic sites) whore are deemed to be seriously ill based on their APACHE II Score at ICU admission.
  • Oral consent will be requested for patients with no barriers to consent (e.g., cognitive impairment). In the case where this cannot occur, the patient’s caregivers will be asked for consent.

Exclusion Criteria: 

  • Minors (≤18 years of age), patients needing an English interpreter.
