Comparison of Esophageal Mucosal Permeability and Absorption Capability

About this study

The purpose of this study is to establish baseline saccharide absorption from the esophagus in healthy controls compared to patients with severe erosive esophagitis.

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Able to provide consent for inclusion into the study.
  • Age ≥ 18.
  • Ability to undergo upper endoscopy.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Prior history of endoscopic eradication therapy within the esophagus.
    • Endoscopic mucosal resection, endoscopic submucosal dissection, ablative therapies (radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, etc.)
  • Known esophageal stricture.
  • Inability to stop proton pump inhibitor therapy for 2 weeks prior to procedure.
  • History of achalasia or lower esophageal sphincter myotomy.
  • Presence of obstructing esophageal mass.
  • History of esophagectomy or gastric surgery (including bariatric surgery).
  • Presence of BE within 5 years of study inclusion during upper endoscopy.
  • Known history of congestive heart failure (either preserved or reduced ejection fraction).
  • Pregnancy (any pre-menopausal women will have a urine point-of-care test to ensure they are not pregnant prior to endoscopy).
