Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) as an Adjunctive Treatment for Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) in Hospitalized Patients

About this study

The purpose of this stufy is to test the feasibility and acceptability of using Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) in the inpatient setting with  Treatment Resistant Depression (TRD) patients, explore the utility of biomarkers to assess response to tDCS, and assess preliminary impact on depressive and cognitive symptoms.  

Participation eligibility

Participant eligibility includes age, gender, type and stage of disease, and previous treatments or health concerns. Guidelines differ from study to study, and identify who can or cannot participate. There is no guarantee that every individual who qualifies and wants to participate in a trial will be enrolled. Contact the study team to discuss study eligibility and potential participation.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • 18 years and older.
  • Clinical diagnosis of treatment-resistant depression.
  • Hospitalized in Generose Psychiatric Units.
  • Voluntary admission status.
  • Moderate or severe depression, defined by PHQ9 equal or more than 15.
  • Ability to provide informed consent.
  • Ability to adhere to protocol.

Exclusion Criteria:

  • Active primary psychotic or substance use disorders.
  • Any active neurological condition (including seizure disorder, traumatic brain injury, stroke).
  • Contraindications to tDCS (including pacemaker, metallic implants in the head or neck [except orthodontic hardware], skin disease causing irritation).
  • Current pregnancy or positive urine pregnancy test (clinical).
  • Any neuromodulation therapy (including ECT, rTMS, DBS, VNS, TES) within the last 3 months.
