Conditions Assessed

Clinical recommendations in the GIRA report are based on guidelines and expert opinion. The recommendations consider a participant's genetic risk factors, family history and clinical risk factors for each condition.

For well-studied conditions that have proven preventive measures, polygenic risk scores may guide medical care and lifestyle changes that can be put in place to lower overall disease risk. These scores estimate the overall risk of getting a disease from variants in multiple genes.

While there are no standard guidelines for using polygenic risk scores to manage patients, the eMERGE study provides healthcare professionals with recommendations for the tested conditions:

The eMERGE Study tests for bronchial asthma, atrial fibrillation, breast cancer, chronic kidney disease, colorectal cancer (monogenic only), coronary heart disease, hypercholesterolemia, obesity, prostate cancer, and diabetes mellitus types 1 and 2.
