Alkhouli.Mohamad@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research of Mohamad Adnan Alkhouli, M.D., encompasses broad areas in the field of structural heart disease, including valvular interventions, intracardiac echocardiography, stroke prevention and artificial intelligence. His study approaches include comparative analyses using large registries, development and evaluation of catheter-based therapies, and evaluation of new methods for disease diagnosis and classification.

Dr. Alkhouli is pursuing several studies on machine learning, hemodynamics and flow dynamics that examine the underlying mechanisms of valvular heart disease and cardioembolic stroke.

Focus areas

  • Valve disease hemodynamics and flow dynamics. Dr. Alkhouli's research incorporates anatomy and physiology to better understand and treat valvular heart disease. He assesses the role of computational flow dynamics, invasive hemodynamics and 4D magnetic resonance imaging in the management of mitral and tricuspid regurgitation as well as atrial fibrillation.
  • Outcomes of transcatheter valve repair and replacement. Dr. Alkhouli investigates various national-level management strategies of valve disease, focusing on predictors of optimal outcomes and disparities in care.
  • Left atrial appendage occlusion. Dr. Alkhouli is one of the national leaders in the field of left atrial appendage occlusion (LAAO). He has published extensively on intracardiac echo-guided LAAO, device-related thrombus and peri-device leak.
  • Device-based thrombus removal therapies. Dr. Alkhouli is the lead inventor of a device that uses cryoenergy to remove clots from blood vessels. The device is currently being tested in animal models.
  • Artificial intelligence (AI). Dr. Alkhouli is evaluating the use of AI to optimize procedures in catheterization laboratories.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Alkhouli's research is focused on gaining deeper understanding of the mechanisms of valvular heart disease and ischemic stroke and on developing more-effective therapies for those diseases. His research goals are to improve health outcomes for people with valve disease and heart rhythm disorders, lower treatment costs, and eliminate health disparities.
