J Kyle Bohman, M.D., is particularly interested in researching diseases that he sees in his clinical practice, both in the operating theater and in the intensive care unit. His primary areas of research interest include aspiration during anesthesia and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Despite meticulous patient care in the operating theater, complications such as aspiration during anesthesia can occur. In hopes of improving the safety of his patients, Dr. Bohman has been working on determining which patients are at high risk of aspiration and finding ways to prevent aspiration during anesthesia. Similarly, he has been working on finding out which patients would benefit most from ECMO therapy, which when applied inappropriately can have its own serious complications. The goal of his ECMO research is to improve outcomes for critically ill patients by optimizing the benefits of ECMO therapy while reducing associated complications.
