bruce.charles@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Charles J. Bruce, M.B., Ch.B., develops technologies that expand how cardiovascular care is delivered. He focuses on remote monitoring, physiologic sensing and advanced imaging.

Dr. Bruce's work integrates wearable devices, artificial intelligence (AI) and ultrasound-based tools to support earlier diagnosis, individualized treatment and safe, minimally invasive interventions. He approaches clinical problems through invention and translation, moving ideas from concept to practical use.

Guiding Dr. Bruce's efforts to build systems that bring advanced care directly to patients are his leadership in innovation and his background as a cardiologist.

Focus areas

  • Remote physiologic monitoring and digital health technologies. Dr. Bruce develops wearable and sensor-based systems that collect ECG, respiratory and activity data to help make diagnoses and manage conditions outside the clinic. As part of his work, he invented the BodyGuardian platform and developed machine learning tools that estimate potassium levels and predict clinical outcomes.
  • Ultrasound-enabled imaging innovations. Dr. Bruce evaluates and advances miniaturized ultrasound technologies, including intracardiac and transesophageal imaging catheters. His studies helped define early clinical applications. These tools now guide structural heart and electrophysiology procedures worldwide.
  • Echocardiography-guided transcatheter therapies. Dr. Bruce collaborates on novel device development for beating-heart structural interventions, including left atrial appendage closure, mitral chordal repair and tricuspid valve therapies. His work supports less-invasive options for patients who are not candidates for open surgery.
  • Integration of AI and remote sensing into clinical care. He investigates new methods for digital data capture and analysis. This includes using machine learning to forecast risk, support remote decision-making and build scalable platforms for home-based care.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Bruce helps people get care where they are. He gives healthcare professionals patient information to depend on without patients coming to a hospital. He does this by designing sensors, imaging devices and digital systems. These tools help make diagnoses earlier. They also guide treatments and reduce the need for invasive procedures.

Dr. Bruce strives to make care safer and convenient. This is especially true for people with heart disease or limited access to specialty care.
