The research of Mac Chesdachai, M.D., includes cardiovascular infections and transplant infectious diseases. He primarily focuses on advancing the understanding of diagnostic modalities, management strategies and preventive measures for infections in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) and left ventricular assist devices (LVADs). Dr. Chesdachai also contributes to various clinical research projects related to fungal infections, tropical medicine and global health research.
Bloodstream infections are a large threat to patients with CIEDs, potentially causing a serious rate of disease and death and great financial burdens. The main treatment for infected CIEDs involves removing the device. But this procedure comes with risks and can lead to devastating complications if it's done when it isn't needed.
Accurate and timely diagnosis is crucial to minimize patient risk and avoid the removal of devices when not needed. Also, research in LVAD and transplant infectious diseases aims to learn more about the challenges and infection risks related to these devices and transplantation.
