SUMMARY
Nayantara Coelho-Prabhu, M.B.B.S., researches the epidemiology, diagnosis and management of dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease. She also studies applications of artificial intelligence in gastrointestinal endoscopy.
Focus areas
-
Dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Coelho-Prabhu studies the epidemiology and outcome of dysplasia in inflammatory bowel disease. She works with Mayo Clinic pathologists to understand the progression and define the various lesion types of inflammatory bowel disease dysplasia. She also participates in many multicenter clinical trials in this field.
-
Enhanced imaging in endoscopy. Dr. Coelho-Prabhu studies the feasibility and efficacy of enhanced imaging techniques, such as chromoendoscopy, in lower gastrointestinal endoscopy. These enhanced imaging techniques used for inflammatory bowel disease and high-risk colonoscopy are used to evaluate dysplasia detection and advanced mucosal resection techniques.
-
Artificial intelligence in endoscopy. Dr. Coelho-Prabhu works with an extensive team to develop and validate algorithms for the application of artificial intelligence in endoscopy.
Significance to patient care
People with inflammatory bowel disease have an increased risk of colon cancer. Colon cancer and precancerous lesions are hard to find because of their flat appearance and surrounding inflammation. Dr. Coelho-Prabhu researches various enhanced imaging techniques, such as chromoendoscopy, to increase the detection of lesions. She also studies the outcomes after endoscopic resection of colon cancer and precancerous lesions and the mechanisms that help prevent a recurrence.
Dr. Coelho-Prabhu leads the efforts, within the field of endoscopy, to develop and apply artificial intelligence algorithms to improve the quality of endoscopy. This is a field where standardization of techniques has the potential to significantly improve the care delivered to individuals undergoing endoscopy and improve outcomes.
