Crum.Brian@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

The research interests of Brian A. Crum, M.D., are primarily neuromuscular conditions, focused on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), myasthenia gravis and Hirayama disease.

Focus areas

  • ALS. Dr. Crum studies how the condition progresses in different people and how previous clinical data may be used to help predict progression in a single individual.
  • Myasthenia gravis. Dr. Crum researches the optimal short- and long-term treatments for this condition.
  • Hirayama disease. Dr. Crum studies the typical disease presentation, with a specific focus on the progression of symptoms and long-term outcomes. He also studies how interventions, such as surgery, may impact progression. He works to find both the best treatments for patients and the underlying cause of the disease.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Crum wants to help doctors and patients better understand ALS, myasthenia gravis and Hirayama disease. This knowledge is important to find the best treatment for each patient. When doctors understand these diseases better, they can teach their patients more about them. Knowing how individual diseases might develop is a powerful tool to help patients and their healthcare teams plan and prepare for treatment.
