Deshmukh.Abhishek@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Abhishek J. Deshmukh, M.B.B.S., is a cardiac electrophysiologist with an active research initiative focused on using large-scale datasets to improve quality, outcomes and risk prediction in heart rhythm conditions.

Dr. Deshmukh's work includes atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias and cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs). He has a particular interest in understanding disease progression, treatment effectiveness and patient outcomes.

A significant aspect of his research involves longitudinal studies evaluating the impact of catheter ablation, device-based therapies and pharmacological interventions on arrhythmia management. Dr. Deshmukh is actively involved in optimizing the use of CIEDs, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs) and cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) devices to enhance arrhythmia detection, management and patient safety. His work also explores lead extraction techniques and outcomes. Dr. Deshmukh also is engaged in device innovation and early adoption of novel technologies, assessing their feasibility and safety.

Dr. Deshmukh's research extends to leveraging nationwide databases and multi-institutional collaborations to drive evidence-based decision-making and optimize patient-centered care models. He also is actively involved in research using artificial intelligence (AI) in electrocardiogram (ECG) procedures for arrhythmia detection, risk stratification, and the identification of novel phenotypes that may benefit from early intervention.

Focus areas

  • Outcomes and risk prediction in arrhythmias. This research includes leveraging the role of large-scale datasets in assessing quality metrics, predicting outcomes and identifying risk factors in atrial fibrillation, ventricular arrhythmias and CIEDs.
  • Optimizing therapeutics. Dr. Deshmukh is evaluating the effectiveness of catheter ablation, device-based interventions and pharmacological therapies in managing complex arrhythmias, with an emphasis on procedural safety, efficacy and long-term patient outcomes.
  • CIEDs and lead management. Dr. Deshmukh studies strategies to optimize the performance of pacemakers, ICDs and CRT devices, with a focus on improving arrhythmia detection, lead extraction techniques and patient safety.
  • AI ECG. This research focuses on exploring the application of AI-enhanced ECG, digital health tools and remote monitoring to refine arrhythmia detection, enhance risk stratification and enable more-precise individualized therapeutic approaches.
  • Novel cardiac devices. Dr. Deshmukh is assessing the clinical utility, feasibility and safety of next-generation devices and innovative technologies aimed at improving procedural efficiency and patient outcomes.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Deshmukh's research helps the diagnosis, treatment and management of heart rhythm disorders by improving risk prediction, therapeutic strategies and device optimization. His work on arrhythmia ablation outcomes in diverse patient populations informs tailored treatment approaches. His studies on risk stratification for pacemaker implantation refine clinical decision-making.

Dr. Deshmukh's research on CIED performance, lead management and device safety contributes to better long-term outcomes. In addition, his focus on emerging technologies and novel cardiac devices speeds up innovation, enabling earlier detection and better management of cardiac arrhythmias.
