Fugate.Jennifer@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Jennifer E. Fugate, D.O., researches the evaluation and management of people with acute conditions affecting the brain. She studies anoxic ischemic brain injury, posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome and acute stroke including aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Dr. Fugate is interested in identifying whether outcomes of severe acute brain injuries can be modified and identifying factors that may predict outcomes.

Focus areas

  • Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome. Dr. Fugate assesses the various clinical presentations, associated brain imaging findings, potential triggers, outcomes and risk factors for posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome recurrences.
  • Anoxic ischemic brain injury. Dr. Fugate studies outcomes in people with anoxic ischemic brain injury. She explores which factors, such as clinical exams, laboratory studies, ancillary brain imaging or electrophysiologic testing, best predict patient outcomes with this condition.
  • Aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. Dr. Fugate evaluates treatments for individuals with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage. She is a site principal investigator of a multicenter study researching intravenous nimodipine as a treatment for people with this condition.

Significance to patient care

Acute brain injuries such as posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome, aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and anoxic ischemic brain injury may lead to poor outcomes. Research is needed to develop treatments for these conditions that improve patient care and lead to improved patient outcomes. Healthcare professionals also need to be able to identify individuals with severe brain injuries who may have better outcomes than initially expected.
