Halker.Rashmi@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Rashmi B. Halker Singh, M.D., studies primary and secondary headache disorders, including migraine and chronic daily headache. This includes understanding underlying pathophysiology, establishing clinical phenotypes and exploring new treatment options for headache disorders. Dr. Halker Singh has a special interest in understanding the gender differences in migraine.

Focus areas

  • Migraine. Dr. Halker Singh participates in clinical trials to develop novel therapeutics for the treatment of migraine and other primary headache disorders. Current available treatment options are often ineffective and poorly tolerated. However, currently several different therapeutic options, both drug and nondrug, are available for clinical trial investigation. Proper investigation of these new therapeutics, which includes appropriate use of inclusion and exclusion criteria, can ensure that these therapeutic options are viable, effective and well tolerated. She is hopeful that they might become available for clinical use in the patient population. Additionally, Dr. Halker Singh's important systematic review of acute treatments for migraine helped inform the stance of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on the role of opioids in migraine treatment.
  • Advocacy for gender and women's topics. Dr. Halker Singh is very active in advocacy topics pertaining to gender and women including as they relate back to migraine, which has a gender predilection toward women. She has published on these topics and is engaged in women's leadership efforts through the American Headache Society and International Headache Society, among others.

Significance to patient care

Migraine and other headache disorders are listed by the World Health Organization as among the most disabling medical conditions worldwide. Dr. Halker Singh's hope is that her efforts can advance care for people who live with headache disorders. She imagines a future in which all individuals with these conditions receive personalized, effective and well-tolerated treatment options to improve their quality of life.
