SUMMARY

Amberly R. Hess, APRN, CNS, D.N.P., a board-certified clinical nurse specialist, studies the adult and gerontologic population. Dr. Hess also studies and implements projects to improve patient and healthcare staff safety. She has expertise in orthopedics and neurology, as well as radiological procedures and inpatient rehabilitation.

Focus areas

  • Second victim syndrome. Dr. Hess assesses how adverse patient care events can negatively affect bedside staff. She investigates the efficacy of current methods to support staff. She also researches new ways to decrease burnout and distress and improve staff longevity.
  • Patient falls with injuries. Dr. Hess evaluates meta-analytical data to explore new ways to reduce patient falls and all falls with injuries. She collaborates with multidisciplinary stakeholders to test fall-prevention prototypes in inpatient areas.
  • Nursing protocol review process. Dr. Hess studies organizational processes and how they affect patient experiences. She explores new ways to use technology and change theory to improve organizational processes and outcomes. Dr. Hess improves efficiency and promotes safety through timely changes to patient care.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Hess' research improves the well-being of healthcare teams by easing burnout and helping them stay in their positions longer. Her work helps healthcare teams make fewer mistakes and take quicker action during sudden changes in patients' health. This work improves patient care and lowers the cost of care for patients and organizations.

Dr. Hess shortens the time it takes to make changes to improve patient safety. She works to reduce the number of patient falls. Doing so makes patients safer and reduces the length of hospital stays and costs related to extra surgeries and radiological scans.
