SUMMARY

Pediatric eye conditions affect children. The research of Brian G. Mohney, M.D., explores a wide variety of pediatric eye conditions. Dr. Mohney focuses on the risk factors for the development of pediatric eye conditions, how commonly they occur and treatment outcomes. Dr. Mohney has extensive expertise on blocked tear ducts in infants and eye misalignment among children. This eye misalignment involves crossed eyes and outward deviating eyes.

Dr. Mohney also investigates the genetic causes of eye misalignment in children.

Focus areas

  • Dr. Mohney investigates many aspects of pediatric eye disorders, including:
    • Diabetic changes in the pediatric eye.
    • Blocked tear ducts in infants.
    • Ocular misalignment.
    • Drooping of the upper eyelid, known as ptosis, that causes decreased vision in children.
    • Eye disorders occurring in the first year of life.
  • Dr. Mohney extensively studies ocular misalignment in children. He has leadership roles in national organizations that enroll children with this condition into randomized clinical studies. Dr. Mohney is an international expert in the drifting out of the eyes, known as intermittent exotropia. He also is an expert in eye crossing in children.
  • Dr. Mohney researches the genetic makeup of more than 20 families with ocular misalignment. He aims to identify the gene or genes that cause this common disorder.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Mohney's research has clinical significance by identifying risk factors and best treatments for a multitude of eye conditions seen in children.
