SUMMARY
The research of Teng Moua, M.D., focuses on fibrotic interstitial lung disease. Fibrotic interstitial lung disease is a heterogeneous group of often progressive and debilitating conditions involving the supportive lung tissue and small airways. Dr. Moua's research includes exploring and understanding aspects of illness progression, the impact of condition burden, and current treatment for patient-reported and patient-centered outcomes.
Focus areas
- Mechanisms of progression in lung fibrosis. Dr. Moua studies the baseline characteristics and environmental factors of people that lead to the clinical and radiological progression of lung fibrosis.
- Patient-reported outcome measures. Dr. Moua studies the mechanisms of symptom and comorbidity impact on patient experience, outcomes, and health-related quality of life in response to both medical and nonmedical therapies.
- Telehealth and home rehabilitation. In conjunction with the Mindful Breathing Lab of Roberto P. Benzo, M.D., Dr. Moua studies the clinical impact of health coaching and home pulmonary rehabilitation on respiratory-related quality of life and physical activity.
Significance to patient care
Fibrotic interstitial lung disease has a significant impact on people's quality of life as many lung problems progress over time and lead to irreversible loss of lung function or death. Advances have been made in better understanding fibrotic mechanisms, disease classification and early medical treatment for lung fibrosis. Despite these advances, much remains unknown regarding slowing or reversing lung fibrosis and predicting an individual's disease course or response to treatment.
Supportive care to improve quality of life and patient well-being also is limited and often applied at end-of-life or when disease burden has significantly advanced, hindering a potential impact. Dr. Moua and his colleagues lead and collaborate with other researchers to explore and understand predictors of disease progression and response to treatment. He also offers rehabilitative and health coaching protocols to improve patient-reported well-being and physical activity.
