SUMMARY
David M. Nestler, M.D., studies health care delivery in the emergency department setting.
The long-term goal of Dr. Nestler's research is to improve the operational design of emergency departments and the ability of emergency department providers to offer timely, efficient and effective care for patients with critical illnesses, particularly those with emergent cardiac disease.
Dr. Nestler's research has been funded by Mayo Clinic.
Focus areas
- Overall operational design of emergency departments. Dr. Nestler is working to understand and improve overall emergency department workflow, staffing, personnel duties and time-sensitive communication within and outside the department.
- Care of patients with emergent cardiac disease. Through collaborations with multiple members of Division of Cardiovascular Diseases leadership, Dr. Nestler studies the timeliness and efficiency of cardiac disease patients in the emergent setting.
He has studied protocols on emergency department and pre-hospital ST-elevation myocardial infarction diagnosis and management. He also studies efficient methods for evaluating chest pain in the emergency department. In addition, he will be extending this study to include emergency department management of atrial fibrillation and congestive heart failure.
Significance to patient care
Dr. Nestler's research is focused on improving the operational efficiency of overall patient care in the emergency department, with a focus on patients presenting with emergent cardiac disease.
The goal of this work is to improve care for Mayo Clinic patients while being generalizable to emergency departments around the country.
