SUMMARY

The research interests of Laura J. Orvidas, M.D., focus on the clinical care of children with ear, nose and throat disorders. Dr. Orvidas concentrates her research on improving the quality of care provided to the young patients in her practice.

Focus areas

  • Telemedicine: Studying the efficacy of telemedicine in delivering postoperative care to pediatric patients after tonsillectomy.
  • Post-tonsillectomy education: Determining whether or not better education can decrease postoperative emergency room visits and increase patient satisfaction.
  • Labial frenectomy: Investigating the incidence of tight labial frenulum in newborns and whether or not releasing the frenulum would aid in successful breast-feeding.

Significance to patient care

Tonsillectomy is one of the most common surgical procedures in pediatric patients. Dr. Orvidas aims to improve the postoperative outcome and patient journey, thereby improving the overall experience for the patient and family.

She also hopes to establish whether tight frenulums in newborns contribute to challenges with successful breast-feeding. This could improve the breast-feeding experience for frustrated mothers.
