Sepsis is a serious condition affecting many individuals who are admitted to the intensive care unit. These are people who may have severe, life-threatening infections leading to significant impact on an individual and a community's health. Antibiotic resistance is a serious problem affecting many individuals in the intensive care unit when commonly available antibiotics do not work. These antibiotics may not work because of complex drug resistance mechanisms that some microorganisms have. Antibiotic resistance is a silent public health emergency and outbreak that is reaching epidemic proportions. Research and innovation are needed in this patient population to preserve individual and community health.
