SUMMARY
The research interests of Scott Steinmann, M.D., center on clinical disorders of the shoulder, elbow and hand.
Focus areas
- Rotator cuff tears. Dr. Steinmann assesses techniques of rotator cuff repair, including techniques of graft augmentation of large tears. He studies the biomechanics of suture repair and healing rates.
- Shoulder replacement surgery. Dr. Steinmann studies the results of different techniques of shoulder replacement surgery. These techniques involve changes to the socket of the shoulder and the humeral head both from trauma and arthritis.
- Elbow arthritis and injuries. Dr. Steinmann identifies fracture patterns in the elbow and assesses techniques that are optimal for reconstruction and healing. He helps study and design implants to correct fractures and tendon injuries. He identifies surgical approaches to the elbow to alleviate the discomfort associated with arthritis.
Significance to patient care
Dr. Steinmann researches new ways to treat patients with clinical disorders of the shoulder, elbow and hand. Findings from clinical studies have identified materials to help augment the repair of rotator cuff tears. Long-term results of shoulder replacement studies have helped determine designs that may offer better function over a greater period. Newer implant designs for elbow fractures may offer stable fracture constructs for greater healing potential.
