Tande.Aaron@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Aaron J. Tande, M.D., performs research related to bone and joint (orthopedic) infections and infections that occur during cancer treatment. His research also focuses on antimicrobial stewardship. He uses a collaborative approach with colleagues in the orthopedic surgery, hematology-oncology and pharmacy departments at Mayo Clinic to answer difficult clinical questions regarding the epidemiology, diagnosis and treatment of infections.

Focus areas

  • Prosthetic joint infection. Joint replacements are life-enhancing procedures. However, prosthetic joint infections can lead to pain and disability. Dr. Tande is studying the epidemiology, clinical characteristics, management and outcomes of infections involving joint replacements.
  • Vertebral infections. Infections of the spine and vertebrae are debilitating and associated with many challenges. Dr. Tande is working to improve the diagnosis and management of vertebral infections.
  • Infections during treatment of cancers. Impairment of the natural host defense systems during cancer treatment can lead to infection that can affect overall cancer treatment success. Dr. Tande performs observational studies that try to promote the understanding of infections that occur during cancer treatment.
  • Antimicrobial stewardship. Optimal use of antibiotics preserves the effectiveness of these powerful medications. Dr. Tande performs studies that try to further the understanding of the appropriate use of antimicrobials.

Significance to patient care

Advances in orthopedic surgery have improved the lives of millions of people around the world. Also, improvements in chemotherapy and cancer care have prolonged the lives of many patients with malignancies. Helping better diagnose and manage patients' complications due to infection will improve their quality and quantity of life. Improving the use of antibiotics will reduce the number of resistant microorganisms and allow more patients to benefit from these medicines.
