Joe Zein, M.D., Ph.D., studies the effects of sex and sex hormones on asthma severity across the life span.

Focus areas

  • Gender and asthma. Dr. Zein's National Institutes of Health-funded research focuses on studying sex-specific associations between germline genetic variation and asthma severity.
  • Asthma severity and remission. Dr. Zein studies asthma healthcare burden to measure severity and predict remission.
  • Asthma and COVID-19. Dr. Zein also studies the effect of asthma on COVID-19 severity and outcomes.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Zein's research aims to improve asthma outcomes by targeting new sex-specific pathways. Significant sex differences occur across the life span in how often asthma happens and how severe it is, as well as outcomes. But the role of sex-based treatments for asthma has not been well studied. A better understanding of these sex-specific differences in asthma severity might result in new hormone-based targeted therapies to make asthma outcomes better across the life span.
