Addressing clinically relevant questions
The Anesthesiology Systematic Review (AnSR) Lab conducts high-quality systematic reviews and meta-analyses.
Overview
The Anesthesiology Systematic Review (AnSR) Lab is a clinical research lab founded by W. Michael Hooten, M.D., a pain medicine specialist.
The AnSR lab addresses clinically relevant questions by performing high-impact systematic reviews and meta-analyses, with a focus on anesthesiology and related subspecialty areas. Our recent work includes analyses related to smoking in adults with spinal cord stimulators, opioid prescriptions, joint injections, postamputation pain and spinal cord injury.
Central to our core mission is cutting across institutional boundaries to build a network of collaborators. We engage medical students, residents, fellows and faculty members in the process of conducting our high-impact systematic reviews and meta-analyses. This collaborative approach builds knowledge about the methodology of performing systematic reviews and yields high-quality manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The AnSR Lab provides a unique opportunity for medical students, residents and fellows to participate in high-impact research that is efficient and time limited and that doesn't require submission of protocols to an institutional review board. This is important because working with our lab ensures that projects will be completed during the training period.
Key team members
Dr. Hooten, the principal investigator, is an anesthesiologist with training in psychiatry, internal medicine and pain medicine. He is a professor of anesthesiology at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, Minnesota. Developing a collaborative, multi-institutional network for conducting high-impact systematic reviews is a main focus of his ongoing clinical research.
Working with Dr. Hooten is Nathan D. Eberhart, a clinical research assistant at Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His work in the lab is exclusively focused on administrative processes. These responsibilities include coordinating communication among researchers, managing the internal digital infrastructure and organizing the timeline of the lab's research studies.
