Training Opportunities
Dr. Worrell is committed to creating excellent learning opportunities for students and postdoc trainees. Our lab is considering applications from students through these Mayo Clinic programs.
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate research opportunities
- Graduate Research Education Program (GREP). An hourly paid research employee program for students with undergraduate degrees who are pursuing medical school or graduate school admission, GREP offers research experiences that can last up to two years and start at any time during the year.
- Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP). An intense program of up to two years, PREP is designed to expose students from underrepresented communities with undergraduate degrees to basic and translational research prior to application to the Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program. Participants receive stipends to cover their expenses.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF). This is a 10-week research fellowship for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years at a U.S. college or university who are interested in pursuing admission to a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program. While in SURF, students develop and complete, or work on, existing research projects and receive stipends.
Candidates interested in the SURF or PREP program should pay close attention to application deadlines and apply through the appropriate Mayo Clinic website. Candidates interested in GREP or postdoctoral positions may contact Dr. Worrell.
Graduate students
Each year, through a highly competitive selection process, students are admitted to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs at Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences. Selected students pursue research in one of these academic specializations:
- Biochemistry and molecular biology.
- Biomedical engineering and physiology.
- Clinical and translational science.
- Immunology.
- Molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics.
- Neuroscience.
- Regenerative sciences.
- Virology and gene therapy.
Students have exceptional flexibility to choose a research mentor. Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences provides stipends and full-tuition scholarships for all Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students.
Candidates interested in the Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs should take note of the application deadlines and apply through the appropriate Mayo Clinic website:
Postdocs
Trainees with a great sense of imagination and motivation and a track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications from any basic science, medicine or engineering field are encouraged to pursue postdoctoral studies in our lab.
Contact Dr. Worrell with a CV, a brief statement of research interests, and two or three references.
Candidates with specific research skills and experience or interests and ideas for research projects in line with current research projects in the Bioelectronics Neurophysiology and Engineering Lab receive preference.
