Why did you choose research as a career?
The current understanding of mental illness is incomplete. This gap in knowledge hinders medical professionals and society, but most importantly it harms those who experience mental illness. I am hopeful that the way we think about and treat mental illness at the end of my career will be vastly different from how it is at the start. I believe research will have a large role in bringing about that change, and being an active participant in clinical and translational research will enable me to help my patients lead full and meaningful lives.
What attracted you to Mayo Clinic to explore research?
As a medical student, graduate student and now resident at Mayo Clinic, I've benefited immensely from Mayo's "three shields" approach emphasizing the interconnectedness of clinical practice, education and research.
Why did you choose Dr. Athreya's lab?
The Athreya lab is a warm, welcoming place with close collaboration between clinical and research personnel.
What are your plans for the future?
In the next year, I plan on completing my residency program while completing several research projects and applying for a clinical fellowship.
