Research Themes
The Human and Integrative Physiology and Clinical Pharmacology Laboratory has several research themes. Under Dr. Joyner, our research team focuses on how various forms of physical stress and mental stress influence the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. These studies are supported by grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.
Some of our current projects include:
- Studying factors that can influence oxygen binding to hemoglobin and how changes in the oxygen-hemoglobin dissociation curve influence responses to exercise, hypoxia and blood loss.
- How hot flashes influence autonomic and cardiovascular function in midlife.
- The role of the autonomic nervous system in spontaneous coronary artery dissection.
- Machine learning to help predict catastrophic blood loss in people who are undergoing both simulated and real experimental blood loss.
- The use of convalescent plasma to treat infectious diseases especially in people with immunocompromised conditions and as part of pandemic preparedness.
