  • Michael J. Coenen

  • Supervisor and Lab Manager

    Coenen is a supervisor and senior research technologist in the Neural Engineering Laboratory. He started his career at Mayo Clinic as a research technologist in neurology in 1995. Curiosity and a strong interest in basic science led him to pursue a career as a technologist in various research labs in areas including neurology, immunology, endocrinology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. In 2018, Coenen became a supervisor and currently oversees a diverse group including research temporary professionals, graduate students and allied health staff. Coenen oversees experts in physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurosurgery, neuroimmunology, and musculoskeletal gene therapy.

  • Yoonbae Oh, Ph.D.

    Dr. Oh received his Ph.D. in neural engineering from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University in South Korea. His work in the Neural Engineering Laboratory of Hanyang University involved developing novel neurochemical recording techniques to measure neurotransmitters in the brain, especially dopamine. He has a strong background of training in electrochemistry and signal processing from his graduate studies. He has published a number of papers on related developments and basic mechanisms in electrochemistry. Currently, he is an associate professor in the Department of Neurologic Surgery.

  • Hojin Shin, Ph.D.

  • Associate Director

    Dr. Shin received his Ph.D. in biomedical engineering from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Hanyang University in South Korea. His work at the Neural Engineering Laboratory of Hanyang University involved developing novel neurochemical recording techniques to measure neurotransmitters in the brain, especially serotonin. He has published several papers related to these developments and basic mechanisms in electrochemistry. Currently, Dr. Shin is an assistant professor in the Department of Neurologic Surgery and the Department of Physiology and Biomedical Engineering.

  • Abhinav Goyal

  • M.D.-Ph.D. Student

    Abhinav Goyal is a fourth-year M.D.-Ph.D. student in the Neural Engineering Laboratory. He hopes to use his interest in artificial intelligence and computational neuroscience to better understand the electrochemical and electrophysiological dynamics of memory formation in the hippocampus.
