Students and postdocs

Dr. Kannan is committed to creating excellent learning opportunities for students and postdoc trainees.

Our lab is considering applications from students through these Mayo Clinic programs:

Each year, through a highly competitive selection process, students are admitted to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Selected students pursue research in an academic specialization, such as:

  • Biochemistry and molecular biology
  • Biomedical engineering and physiology
  • Clinical and translational science
  • Immunology
  • Molecular pharmacology and experimental therapeutics
  • Neuroscience
  • Virology and gene therapy

Students have exceptional flexibility to choose a research mentor, and stipends and full-tuition scholarships are available.

Graduate Research Education Program (GREP)

GREP is an hourly paid research employee program for students with undergraduate degrees who are pursuing medical school or graduate school admission. The program can last up to two years and start at any time during the year.

Undergraduate Research Employment Program (UREP)

UREP is an hourly paid research employee program for currently enrolled college students who have completed at least one year of undergraduate studies or a high school mentorship through Mayo Clinic.

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF)

SURF is a 10-week research fellowship for undergraduate students in their sophomore or junior years at a U.S. college or university who are interested in pursuing admission to a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. program. Students develop and complete or work on existing research projects. Students receive stipends.

Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP)

PREP is an intense program of up to two years designed to expose students from underrepresented communities with undergraduate degrees to basic and translational research prior to application to Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. programs. Students receive stipends to cover their expenses.

Postdocs

Trainees with a great sense of imagination and motivation and a track record of peer-reviewed scientific publications from any basic science, medicine or engineering field are encouraged to pursue postdoctoral studies in our lab. Candidates with specific research skills and experience or interests and ideas for research projects in line with current research projects in the Kannan Lab receive preference.
