• Analysis of Urinary Thromboxane B2, 8-iso-prostane, PGD2 and PGE2 in Mast Cell Disease Rochester, Minn.

  Specific aims:

  1. Measurement of urinary arachidonic acid metabolites such as prostaglandins PGD2, PGE2, 8-isoprostane and TBXB2 in mastocytosis.

  2. Comparison of these novel markers to conventional markers of tryptase and the well characterized n-methyl histamine and 11β-prostaglandinF2α

   

• Contribution of Oxidative Stress in Asthma Exacerbated Respiratory Disease (AERD) Through Measurement of 8-isoprostane F2-alpha Rochester, Minn.

  The purpose of this study is to determine the contribution of oxidative stress as an underlying cause in asthma exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) through the measurement of urine 8-isoprostane F2-alpha.

• Immune Response to Pneumococcal Polysaccharide Vaccine (23-valent) Predicts Asthma Status and Outcomes in Late Adolescents With Asthma Rochester, Minn.

  Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices (ACIP) from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that children (6-18 years) and adults (≥19 years old) with chronic lung condition such as asthma or cigarette smoking be vaccinated with Pneumococcal vaccine (PPSV23). The purpose of this study is to increase awareness of vaccination to late adolescents with asthma and smokers (social aspect of study), and to recommend vaccination (which is the clinical aspect). Individuals who agree to receiving vaccine will be enrolled in research to determine whether late adolescents with and without asthma (smokers) have distinctive pneumococcal vaccine response patterns and whether such patterns are associated with subsequent variance in asthma outcomes.

• Serum Analysis of Chronic Rhinosinusitis with and without Nasal Polyposis for Systemic Markers and Sub-phenotype Discovery Rochester, Minn.

  The purpose of this study is to find out what immune system processes cause the chronic inflammation that happens with chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) and if there are different immune system pathways involved among CRS patients.
