Training Opportunities
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology plays a key role in the mission of Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to foster a diverse academic community, built on a foundation of individualized learning, that empowers multidisciplinary trainees and scientists to advance innovation and human health. Since the department's inception, faculty members have actively participated in Mayo Clinic's educational mission.
The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology drives this mission through two primary means. First, the faculty participates in the classroom education of most Mayo graduate students. During a student's first year in graduate school, the majority of learners participate in five core curriculum courses, directed by department faculty members, where students are introduced to problem-solving-based learning. Faculty members also direct more than a dozen additional courses and tutorials each year, exploring more-advanced topics that directly impact biomedical research.
Second, faculty members serve as mentors and advisers to graduate student apprentices who perform cutting-edge research. It is through this kind of commitment to education and scientific mentorship that the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology can inspire and train the next generation of biomedical researchers.
The faculty, postdoctoral fellows, allied health staff and students of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology participate in multiple weekly academic colloquia, including a visiting faculty seminar series (cosponsored with Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences), a student works-in-progress series and a student-led journal club. Colloquia are teleconferenced to all three Mayo Clinic campuses. Together with special seminars and organized symposia, these activities contribute to a vibrant academic environment.
While Mayo Clinic is world-renowned for its excellence in medicine, education and research are fundamental to its identity and guiding principles. Transformational healthcare begins within the walls of our research programs and learning environments.
