Arizona Orthopedic Internship Opportunities
The Division of Orthopedic Surgery Research offers several mentorship and internship programs at Mayo Clinic in Arizona. These opportunities are located in Phoenix and Tempe.
High School Orthopedic Mentorship Program
High school juniors and seniors are eligible to apply for a mentorship program for 1 to 2 semesters. Our High School Orthopedic Mentorship Program pairs students with Mayo Clinic orthopedic mentors. The high school education coordinator or representative and the student's parent or guardian must sign an agreement with Mayo Clinic to participate.
Arizona high school students also have opportunities through the Mayo Clinic Career Advancement, Research, and Education Summer (CARES) Program.
Undergraduate Research Internship
College undergraduate students interested in medical school and orthopedics can apply for our Undergraduate Research Internship. This unpaid internship lasts up to 90 days. Students must be enrolled in an internship course through their academic institution and earn course credit hours to be eligible. Students are assigned a mentor and have the opportunity to shadow an orthopedic surgeon in the clinic and operating room.

Medical School Student Orthopedic Summer Research Internship
Medical students interested in orthopedics can apply for an unpaid mentored research internship as a research trainee. Our Medical School Student Orthopedic Summer Research Internship is for medical students between their first and second year of medical school with a strong interest in orthopedics.
Applicants must hold a bachelor's degree or be working toward a master's, M.D., Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field deemed relevant by the program. This internship must represent an educational opportunity. Interns can't be assigned work-related duties.
The internship runs from a minimum of 60 days up to a maximum of one year. Interns are eligible for a three-month extension if their project is not completed within one year, up to a total of 15 months.

Unmatched Medical Student Orthopedic Research Program
The Division of Orthopedic Surgery Research offers an unmatched medical student one-year unpaid research fellowship in Arizona that starts each July.
The Unmatched Medical Student Orthopedic Research Program is an opportunity to strengthen your curriculum vitae for the increasingly competitive Orthopedic Surgery Match. Research trainees in this program have the opportunity to train under consultant mentors in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery Research. Research focus areas may include hip and knee; shoulder and elbow; foot and ankle; spine; hand; pediatrics; trauma; sports medicine; and oncology.
Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Applications for each cycle of the Unmatched Medical Student Orthopedic Research Program are accepted from March 1 until April 30.
Prepare all your application materials in advance. You're responsible for ensuring that all application materials are complete at the time of submission. The application process must be completed in one session. The selection committee won't review incomplete applications.
