Barlow.Jonathan@mayo.edu Clinical Profile

SUMMARY

Jonathan D. Barlow, M.D., is an orthopedic surgeon whose areas of clinical and research interest include surgical conditions that affect the shoulder and elbow joints.

Dr. Barlow's strong practice interest in patients with traumatic injuries (such as fractures, dislocations and tendon tears) and degenerative conditions (such as arthritis and chronic tendon issues) makes him uniquely positioned to conduct research on optimizing clinical outcomes for patients with a broad spectrum of shoulder and elbow injuries and conditions. Dr. Barlow's practice and research interests also extend to clavicle and humeral shaft fractures.

Focus areas

  • Outcomes for shoulder and elbow replacement
  • Outcomes for surgical and nonsurgical management of fractures of the clavicle, scapula, humerus, shoulder and elbow
  • Outcomes and treatment options for shoulder dislocations and combined fractures and dislocations
  • Outcomes and surgical treatment options for rotator cuff tears — particularly massive rotator cuff tears — including superior capsular reconstruction and emerging technologies

Significance to patient care

With more people remaining active into older age, optimizing outcomes for patients with shoulder and elbow trauma and degenerative conditions is of increasing importance. By optimizing surgical treatment options and outcomes, patients can be active longer and enjoy an improved quality of life.
