SUMMARY
Each year, millions of patients are diagnosed with acquired brain injuries, which include traumatic brain injuries, concussions, strokes and brain tumors. Since many of these patients go on to have lasting symptoms, brain rehabilitation becomes a key part of their recoveries.
Thomas F. Bergquist, Ph.D., L.P., is board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP) in clinical neuropsychology. His research centers on rehabilitation following brain injury and coping with disability. Dr. Bergquist is a co-investigator for the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR)-funded Traumatic Brain Injury Model System at Mayo Clinic.
Focus areas
- Psychotherapeutic interventions to enhance mood and coping in people with acquired brain injury.
- Group interventions to improve coping and resilience in people with acquired brain injury and their family members.
- Telerehabilitation.
- Understanding the rehabilitation needs of people from underserved and marginalized populations with acquired brain injury.
- Rehabilitation of people with COVID-19.
Significance to patient care
Acquired brain injuries, such as traumatic brain injuries, concussions, strokes and brain tumors, are a common cause of disability. These injuries can be difficult to treat, resulting in significant disruption to the lifestyles of patients and their families. The goal of Dr. Bergquist and his colleagues is to translate clinical research directly into clinical care to improve the lives of people with acquired brain injuries.
