SUMMARY

The research activities of Sean M. Caples, D.O., M.S., focus on sleep-disordered breathing, particularly cardiovascular manifestations of sleep apnea syndromes, and clinical trials to measure the effects of various treatments. He also has an interest in inpatient management of pulmonary embolism and is a co-investigator on clinical trials studying new treatments modalities in this area.

Focus areas

  • Atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea. Dr. Caples explores the link between atrial fibrillation and sleep apnea, focusing on whether treatment of sleep apnea affects the natural history of this common heart rhythm problem.
  • Alternative treatments for sleep apnea. Dr. Caples examines how alternatives to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) — a common therapy that uses mild air pressure to keep airways open during sleep — affect health outcomes in patients with sleep apnea.
  • Management of pulmonary embolism. Dr. Caples is part of a team studying emerging treatments for patients who have been hospitalized with pulmonary embolisms.

Significance to patient care

Dr. Caples is working to better understand how sleep apnea and heart disease are connected. This will allow healthcare professionals to treat both conditions more effectively. He's also studying ways to treat pulmonary embolism that could help patients recover faster and spend less time in the hospital.
