Cody C. Wyles, M.D.

Dr. Wyles is an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, with a focus on complex hip and knee reconstruction. Dr. Wyles also holds dual appointments as an associate professor of orthopedics and clinical anatomy at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

His primary research interest is leveraging the tools of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance patient-specific phenotyping and assess the natural history of degenerative hip and knee conditions to improve predictive analytics.

Dr. Wyles has authored 175 peer-reviewed publications. He has won the CORR ORS Richard A. Brand Award for Outstanding Orthopaedic Research, multiple awards from The Hip Society and The Knee Society, and several other notable awards in orthopedic research.

Dr. Wyles grew up in the Yakima Valley in eastern Washington state. He received a Bachelor of Science in neurobiology with honors from the University of Washington. He completed medical school at Mayo Medical School, now called Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine, and earned two master's degrees from Mayo Clinic School of Graduate Medical Education. Dr. Wyles completed his orthopedic residency training at Mayo Clinic, a fellowship in adult hip and knee reconstruction at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina, and a complex hip surgery traveling fellowship in the United Kingdom.

Michael J. Taunton, M.D.

Dr. Taunton is an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He is a professor of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. Dr. Taunton also is the program director of the Adult Reconstructive Surgery, Lower Extremity (Hip and Knee) Fellowship at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota.

He is a fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon in hip and knee reconstruction. His special interests are the direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty, knee arthroplasty, advanced pelvic and femoral reconstruction for revision of total hip arthroplasty, and machine learning algorithms applied to the arthroplasty practice.

Dr. Taunton hails from southern Missouri. He completed medical school at St. Louis University School of Medicine in Missouri. He did his orthopedic residency at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. He completed an adult reconstruction fellowship at OrthoCarolina in Charlotte, North Carolina.

A. Noelle Larson, M.D.

Dr. Larson is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. She also is a professor of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and is chair of the Division of Community Orthopedics in Mayo Clinic Health System. Her interests include scoliosis, CT-guided navigation and nonfusion scoliosis surgery.

Dr. Larson works to safely innovate new treatments for scoliosis and leverage the power of new technology for better care. She leads several research studies evaluating posterior dynamic distraction and other scoliosis surgeries and is principal investigator of a U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study of vertebral body tethering. Dr. Larson has held several leadership positions in orthopedic organizations and has authored more than 175 peer-reviewed articles.

Joaquin Sanchez-Sotelo, M.D., Ph.D.

Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo is an orthopedic surgeon at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, and a professor of orthopedics at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science. He is chair of the Division of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at Mayo Clinic.

Dr. Sanchez-Sotelo is actively involved in shoulder sports medicine, fracture fixation and designing implants for joint replacement. He has published more than 400 articles in peer-reviewed literature and more than 50 book chapters. He has won numerous awards for his work in orthopedics.

Kellen L. Mulford, Ph.D.

Dr. Mulford received his Bachelor of Arts degree from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota, where he conducted research on ultrahigh field MRI and artificial intelligence. He received a fellowship from the National Center for Advancing Translational Science from 2020-2022.

Dr. Mulford, a senior data science analyst, is always thinking about how research translates to clinical practice. He is especially attuned to the data engineering aspect of research problems with huge scale imaging datasets and loves a good ETL pipeline. Outside of work, Dr. Mulford enjoys tending to his native wildflower gardens and his home-hosted Apache Spark cluster, riding his bikes, and reading bike infrastructure planning documents.

Linjun Yang, Ph.D.

Dr. Yang is a data scientist analyst in the lab, where he develops AI solutions for orthopedic surgeons. His work includes computer programming, AI algorithm design, data management and reading scientific literature. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a major in biomedical engineering.

Anish Kanabar, M.S.

Anish, a data science analyst, joined the lab in the fall of 2023 after completing a master's degree in computer science at the University of Chicago. Before that, he studied neuroscience at Columbia University in New York and applied computational methods to the investigation of electroencephalogram (EEG) and deep brain stimulation-based markers of psychiatric illness at the Neurotherapeutics Laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Cortney M. LeVan

Cortney is an administrative assistant in the lab and holds a medical assistant degree. She was born and raised in Dodge Center, Minnesota. She began her career in Family Medicine at Mayo Clinic in 2017 and transitioned to the Orthopedic Surgery Artificial Intelligence Lab in 2023. Outside of work, Cortney cherishes time with her husband and two children. Her hobbies include baking and outdoor activities such as camping and golfing.

Karina Gonzalez Carta, M.D., M.S.

Dr. Gonzalez Carta, born and raised in Venezuela, joined Mayo Clinic in 2015. She is a senior program coordinator for research in the lab and the lab manager. She also is an assistant professor of regenerative medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science.

Sami Saniei, M.D.

Sami is a 2024-2025 research trainee in the OSAIL lab. He was born and raised in South Florida. He received his Bachelor of Arts in public health studies from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and his medical degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2024. He is an avid fan of the Miami Dolphins and Florida Panthers.

Miguel M. Girod-Hoffman, B.S.

Miguel is a 2024-2025 research trainee in the OSAIL lab. He's a rising fourth-year medical student at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine. He is from San Juan, Puerto Rico, and earned a degree in science-business from the University of Notre Dame in Indiana. In his free time, he enjoys playing sports with friends, supporting Los Angeles sports teams and fishing with family.

Pouria Rouzrokh, M.D., M.P.H.

Dr. Rouzrokh serves as a remote research collaborator for the lab. He has a strong interest and background in artificial intelligence, data science and programming. He plans to pursue a radiology residency. Dr. Rouzrokh received his medical degree from Tehran University of Medical Sciences in Iran. He has master's degrees in health professions education and public health. Since joining Mayo Clinic in 2020, he has contributed to more than 50 peer-reviewed publications and has received several research awards. Outside of work, Dr. Rouzrokh enjoys cycling, coding, electronics, reading about psychology and playing computer games.
