Hello, I’m doctor Bradley Leibovich, medical director of the Center for Digital Health at Mayo Clinic.
We’re exploring whether the characteristics in a person’s voice can be used to identify otherwise undetected heart disease, among other conditions.
Imagine a future where a simple voice recording made on a smartphone from the comfort of your home can alert you and your doctor to early heart disease while it can be effectively treated and complications prevented.
Early evidence suggests this is possible. And we’re doing a study to test this hypothesis. Inviting people with and without medical conditions to participate.
Because your vocal cords have a rich blood supply, nerve supply and depend on airflow from your lungs, many conditions result in subtle changes in your voice that may not be detectable to human ears.
These changes are present irrespective of the language you speak or your accent. Artificial intelligence, or AI, has the potential to detect these changes using voice as an early warning signal for the presence of heart disease.
In simple terms, our goal is to use computer algorithms to look for patterns and voice samples. To do this, we need large volumes of data. The more voice samples and health data we can analyze, the more accurate the AI becomes.
This study has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by developing ways to identify disease much earlier than traditional methods which could dramatically improve treatment outcomes.
The app only records voice while it’s in use, and the user is actively intentionally recording a sample.
Participation will take only seconds - a day when you choose to contribute.
Thank you for considering partnering with us in this research. Together, we can discover new and better ways to detect, predict and prevent disease.
