How It Works
If you received an invitation in your patient portal or a referral from your healthcare professional, you may be able to help Mayo Clinic researchers understand how voice can predict cardiovascular disease.
Voice is a practical method to monitor cardiovascular health. It does not require expensive equipment or skin contact for recording. Early work has shown that voice signals can be processed to determine the absence or presence of atrial fibrillation, pulmonary hypertension, or coronary artery disease.
But early studies have not used advanced analytical approaches, such as neural networks, or have required specialized recording equipment. This study could transform medical care and practice by using voice and other signals from your equipment in your environment. The purpose of this study is to test the practical use of such tools and validate the clinical usefulness of the data collected.
A previous Mayo Clinic study has shown that an ECG in conjunction with artificial intelligence can predict left ventricular dysfunction, silent atrial fibrillation, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and electrolyte abnormalities, as well as estimate patient age and sex. It does this using convolutional neural networks or multiple layers of data applied to the standard 12-lead ECG. These ECGs have been made available to clinicians through an AI dashboard in the electronic health record.
Biological signals, including voice and ECG, as well as physical activity, can be processed using AI tools to detect and monitor health and disease. This study starts with an analysis of cardiovascular disease and may be used more widely to detect or monitor other conditions using the voice data collected in a Mayo Clinic repository. These data can be used to learn about voice signals and their meaning.
This study gives you the option to submit voice data using the Mayo Clinic CV Research app, and if you have an Apple Watch (version 4 or newer) you may submit ECGs from your Health Kit. iOS users upon accessing the CV Research app will be asked what data you wish to share from Health Kit. But an Apple Watch is not required to participate in the study.
You can download the Mayo Clinic CV Research app to use a mobile device instead of your desktop or laptop computer.
