CMC Arthroplasty Rehab
Rochester, MN
Tightrope arthroplasty and ligament reconstruction with tendon interposition (LRTI) are both acceptable treatment options for painful arthritis at the thumb carpometacarpal joint. Advocates of the tightrope arthroplasty often cite early postoperative mobilization as a benefit to using this technique over alternative procedures. However, early postoperative rehabilitation protocols are used following the LRTI technique at our institution as well. Our study aims to clarify whether early mobilization following LRTI results in different short-term outcomes compared to tightrope arthroplasty.

A Study to Analyze the Amount of Antibiotic Absorbed into Tissues Comparing Two Different Modes of Administration
Scottsdale/Phoenix, AZ
This study aims to investigate whether administration of vancomycin intravenously via a Bier block, typically a method for providing regional anesthesia in the upper extremity, leads to higher soft tissue and bone antibiotic concentrations compared to routine intravenous administration. Higher tissue concentrations could be desirable for prophylaxis in complex upper extremity reconstruction, or for treatment of difficult infections.
-
Analysis of Synovial Fluid for Metal Ions
Rochester, MN
This research study is being done to find out if there is any correlation between metal ion levels (cobalt and chromium) in the fluid around your hip, and those that are found in your blood. One factor that may cause failure of a total hip arthroplasty is an elevated level of these ions around the hip.

A Study of the Risk of Risk of Dementia and Heart Failure in Total Joint Arthroplasty
Rochester, MN
This project is focused on understanding the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia in total hip and total knee arthroplasty patients. It involves 4 aims:
AIM 1. To determine the risk of dementia in patients with TJA. Using the REP, we will identify a population-based cohort of 9,000 TJA patients and a matched cohort of 9,000 non-TJA patients. The overall risk of dementia and subtypes will be compared between the two cohorts.
AIM 2. To determine cognitive function and neuroimaging measures in patients with TJA. Within the existing data from the MCSA cohort (IRB: 14-004401), we ...
