Hip and knee arthroplasty

A note from the division program directors

The Gap Year Program in the Division of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty offers a unique opportunity to interact with world-renowned joint replacement surgeons and to benefit from extensive education and mentorship.

The hip and knee arthroplasty program is open to third-year medical students with a strong interest in orthopedics and a drive to gain valuable experience while enhancing their residency application. As a clinical research fellow in the program, each student serves as a research coordinator for both new and ongoing projects, including retrospective reviews, prospective cohort studies and multicenter prospective randomized controlled trials.

Research areas include:

  • Revision hip and knee arthroplasty.
  • Technology including robotics.
  • Periprosthetic joint infection.
  • Periprosthetic fractures.
  • Multimodal analgesia and anesthesia.
  • Artificial intelligence.

Gap Year Program fellows participate in numerous research projects while collaborating with physicians in our division and with other fellows and residents. They engage in weekly resident Grand Rounds and hip and knee conferences. They also have an opportunity to present their research at regional and national conferences through such organizations as the Mid-America Orthopaedic Association (MAOA), the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS) and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS).

The Division of Hip and Knee Arthroplasty accepts two students through the Gap Year Program.
