Ph.D. track in clinical and translational science

The Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCaTS) collaborates with Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences to offer a Ph.D. track in clinical and translational science.

This track prepares doctoral students to conduct rigorous, team-based research that helps move discoveries toward improved health. Students develop foundational knowledge in clinical and translational science, gain experience working across disciplines, and complete mentored research with Mayo Clinic faculty from a wide range of scientific and clinical fields.

Mayo Clinic Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences administers the overall Ph.D. Program. CCaTS delivers the clinical and translational science coursework and oversees the mentored research experience, which is a cornerstone of the track.

TL1 Predoctoral Program

The CCaTS TL1 Predoctoral Program is a selective training appointment for students in the clinical and translational science Ph.D. track. TL1 appointees are drawn from students in this track and represent a focused cohort within the broader doctoral training program.

The TL1 experience provides additional structured support for students preparing to become translational scientists. Appointees participate in advanced training and career development activities that emphasize interdisciplinary collaboration, scientific communication, translational science competencies and mentored research.

By integrating TL1 training within the clinical and translational science Ph.D. track, CCaTS provides a cohesive pathway for predoctoral learners to build the knowledge, skills and collaborative experience needed to address complex health challenges across the translational research spectrum.

Mentored research

Mentored research is central to both the clinical and translational science Ph.D. track and the TL1 Predoctoral Program. Students work with Mayo Clinic faculty mentors whose expertise spans basic science, clinical research, population health, informatics, implementation science, and other areas relevant to clinical and translational science.

Through this mentorship model, students learn to design and conduct research that is scientifically rigorous, responsive to health needs, and informed by the practical challenges of moving discoveries into clinical and community settings.
